How to make a boss fight in Roblox that feels like a souls game

by 8rc1 · updated 24 Oct 2026

Most Roblox bosses are a big NPC with a lot of HP that swings on a timer. Players stop paying attention after the third swing. A fight feels good when the player is reading the boss and the boss is reading the player.

Every attack has three parts

Wind-up, active and recovery. The wind-up is how long the player gets to see it coming (0.4 to 0.9 s for most attacks). Active is the few frames that actually hit. Recovery is the punish window: the boss is open and the player gets a free hit. Without recovery the fight is pure dodging and nobody has fun.

Keep the hitbox check on the server, on the active frames only. Let the client play the animation and the sound the moment the server says the attack started, or the boss looks laggy to everyone.

Give the player more than one answer

Posture, not just HP

A second bar that fills when the player parries or lands hits on a stunned boss. When it breaks, the boss drops and the player gets a finisher. It turns a damage race into a fight where skill ends it early.

Make the AI read the player

Track what the player does: rolls early, spams attacks, backs off to heal. Then answer it. Delay an attack so early rolls whiff. Hop back from a swing and counter. Close the gap when they drink a flask. Mix the choices with a seeded random so it never loops the same way twice.

The camera is half the fight

Lock-on that aims slightly ahead of the boss, a follow that never lags behind the player, and small one-frame shakes on hits that never build up into the aim. A roar with a short cutscene sells phase two better than any health bar.

Skip the build

All of this is in the free Boss Kit: a four-armed oni with his own AI (reads rolls, dodges swings, perilous attacks), the player's katana chain, roll, parry, heal and lock-on, an Elden Ring style camera and an execution cinematic. R15 and R6, PC, controller and phone, one drag into your place.

Questions

How do I make a boss fight in Roblox?

Build every attack as wind-up, active frames and a recovery window the player can punish. Give the player a roll with invincibility frames and a parry, add a posture bar that leads to a finisher, check hits on the server, and make the AI react to what the player does. The free Vanta Systems Boss Kit has all of this as a drag-in system.

How long should a boss attack wind-up be in Roblox?

Roughly 0.4 to 0.9 seconds for normal attacks, longer for big slams. Shorter than that and players on phones or with ping can't react.

Is there a free Roblox boss system?

Yes. The Vanta Systems Boss Kit is free: boss AI, player combat, camera and cinematics, R15 and R6, PC, controller and phone.
